Throttle ok

The throttle works OK but the bike battery only runs for less than 10 miles on a full charge.
I've emailed about it and had no reply.
Must I recharge every 5 miles ?
This is not always going to be possible.
I expected a much greater range per charge.
I previously owned a 12 year old e bike and even in its battery's last year of life it did better than this bike.
Is this right ?
